drain-2

You check your refrigerator. Nope, none of the food looks like it’s morphing into a green creature. Nobody’s locked up in the restroom. The garbage cans are nothing out of the ordinary. So where is that smell coming from? Prime Suspect #1: Your drains. Yes, if that mysterious stench is coming from your drains, you could have a problem with your drain or sewer system. And, of course, if you’d like one of our pros to come out and take a look, Zurn Plumbing is up to the task, no matter how bad it smells.

Is it coming from one drain? If the stench is confined to a single drain, there are a couple of possible causes. You may have a dry p-trap. The p-trap is the bend in the pipes below your drain, which is designed to hold water at all times. Or, think of it this way—the p-trap is a small fortress of water that keeps smells and all sorts of undesirables from coming back up through the drain and into your home. If you don’t use that drain often, it is possible that the water in the p-trap has evaporated. Time to rebuild that wall of water. Run some water through the drain for a few minutes and see if that resolves the problem.

Is it coming from multiple drains? If so, you’re dealing with a more serious issue. The source is further down in your sewer line or with the sewer vent on your roof. More than likely, you’re going to need a sewer cleaning to get rid of the smell.
