FAQs

A toilet that keeps running often indicates that some of its internal components are not functioning properly. The flapper or the fill valve might be worn out, resulting in a constant flow of water. It could also be due to an improper adjustment of the float that controls the fill level. If you’re comfortable with some basic DIY, these parts can be replaced or adjusted as needed. However, if you’re unsure or the problem persists, it will be best to hire a professional, like our experienced plumbers at Zurn Plumbing, who can diagnose and fix the problem effectively and efficiently.

You can put soft food scraps, cold water, dish soap, and ice cubes in your garbage disposal. Avoid inserting grease, fibrous vegetables, eggshells, hard items like bones and fruit pits, starchy foods, and coffee grounds, as these can damage or clog the system. For any disposal or plumbing issues, consider seeking assistance from our team at Zurn Plumbing.

While chemical drain cleaners can effectively clear certain clogs, they can also pose some risks. These cleaners often contain harsh chemicals that can be harmful to both human health and the environment. The heat produced by caustic and acidic drain cleaners can potentially damage pipes, especially older or plastic ones, which can weaken and crack over time. Therefore, repeated use of chemical drain cleaners may result in expensive repairs or replacements. For safer alternatives, consider enzymatic drain cleaners, which use natural enzymes and bacteria to break down organic matter.

Nonetheless, if a drain issue persists, it is recommended to consult a professional service, such as Zurn Plumbing, to help ensure the necessary care and appropriate methods are applied to solve your plumbing issues.

There are several reasons why hot water can run out quickly. It could be due to sediment buildup inside the water heater tank over time or a broken dip tube. A faulty thermostat that needs resetting or adjusting can also contribute to the issue. Alternatively, the problem could stem from increased demand during peak usage times, a water heater with insufficient capacity, power supply issues, or even a bad lower heating element. For a precise diagnosis, consider reaching out to the professionals at Zurn Plumbing.

Drains can become clogged due to various reasons. Hair or fur mixed with soap scum or grease can create blockages over time. Accumulation of inappropriately flushed objects, like toys or hygiene products, can also lead to clogs in the pipe system. Another common reason is the rinsing of grease or oils down the drain, which can solidify upon cooling and form a blockage. The continual buildup of soap residue can also disrupt normal flow. Food waste, particularly certain types such as coffee grounds, egg shells, or starchy items, may also cause clogs if disposed of improperly, especially in the absence of a garbage disposal.

Hard water can lead to mineral buildup inside the pipes, which can progressively create a blockage. Lastly, poor water flow due to incorrectly sized pipes, improperly installed fixtures, or a problem with local water pressure can cause drainage problems. If a blockage persists, it’s recommended to seek professional help like Zurn Plumbing.

When hiring a plumber, check for a valid state plumbing license and adequate liability insurance. Assess their experience and reputation through online reviews or personal recommendations, and verify if they offer warranties for work and parts. Lastly, ensure they provide upfront pricing with clear quotes and explanations for any potential extra costs.

As a general guideline, scheduling a professional plumbing inspection at least once a year is recommended. This allows any minor issues to be detected and fixed before they become big problems. However, you might benefit from more frequent checks if your property is older or has had significant plumbing issues. Also, it’s always a good idea to get an inspection if you notice any signs of plumbing problems, such as unusual noises, slow drains, or sudden changes in water pressure. Remember, preventative maintenance is critical to a well-functioning plumbing system.

Yes, a running toilet can significantly raise your water bill. Over time, even a minor leak can result in substantial water waste, with some estimates reporting up to 200 gallons wasted per day for more severe leaks. Therefore, addressing and fixing a running toilet as soon as it’s noticed helps to prevent unnecessary water waste and financial costs.

Epoxy pipe lining is known for its durability, with a typical lifespan of 50 years or more. Its extended lifespan is due to its ability to protect pipes from external invasions and internal damage. Essentially, epoxy pipe lining presents a cost-effective and time-efficient alternative to complete pipe replacement while offering comparable longevity.

The lifespan of cast iron sewer pipes can vary significantly based on several factors, including usage, regular maintenance, and environmental conditions. On average, cast iron sewer lines can last between 50 to 75 years. However, well-maintained sewer systems can potentially remain functional for up to 100 years or longer.

Yes, it’s possible to patch a cracked clay sewer pipe, typically by using pipe relining or pipe patching techniques, essentially creating a new line within the old one. However, the effectiveness of these methods depends on the extent of the damage. Minor cracks can often be successfully patched, but a more extensive repair or complete pipe replacement might be required for significant damage. Always remember that proper diagnosis using methods such as sewer camera inspection is critical to identifying the cause of the problem and selecting the best repair strategy.

Trenchless pipe repair or replacement presents a viable alternative to traditional methods for several reasons. First, it is more efficient. This technology allows repairs to be made with just 1 or 2 entry points to the existing drain pipe. Excavating is not necessary. Secondly, trenchless methods prove to be more cost-effective. The savings stem from reducing labor costs and material expenses as there is less need for extensive excavation and subsequent landscape restoration. Lastly, trenchless pipe replacement creates less disruption. With no excavation, your property remains largely untouched. This equates to fewer disruptions in everyday life and maintenance of your property’s aesthetics.

Yes, it is absolutely possible to reline a cast iron sewer pipe. Pipe relining is a common technique used to rehabilitate damaged pipes. Using this method, a new inner pipe liner is installed, effectively restoring the structural integrity of the lines. A method known as trenchless pipe relining allows for the repair or rehabilitation of underground sewer pipes without needing extensive excavation. This not only minimizes disruption but also reduces costs. Relining is not only feasible but also a practical choice for the repair of cast iron sewer pipes.

Pipe relining technology is versatile and caters to a wide range of pipe diameters. The procedure can accommodate relatively small pipes, approximately 2 inches in diameter, and can equally be used for much larger pipes, even those up to 36 inches in diameter. However, the specifics may vary based on the technology and materials used and the site conditions.

Sewer pipes can leak due to a variety of causes. They might be damaged by external forces or pressure, often from heavy machinery or digging activities. Materials like clay and cast iron that make up the sewer pipes may also corrode over time, leading to possible leaks. Pipes could also develop leaks from faulty construction or installation. Additionally, clogs can generate pressure, causing water to escape through any weak spots; notably, these clogs can often occur due to root intrusion, where tree or plant roots infiltrate the pipes. Furthermore, natural disasters, including earthquakes, floods, and heavy rain, can cause significant damage to sewer lines, leading to leaks. These factors could individually or collectively contribute to leakages in sewer pipes.
