Like most people, you’ve probably become acquainted with many of the flaws of your home over the past few months – from the frayed carpet in your family room to outdated kitchen cabinets to leaky faucets in your bathroom. If you’re seriously thinking about remodeling your kitchen or bathroom, one of the most important things you can do is hire a plumber that’s qualified to work on the renovations you desire. And, get your plumber involved in the planning phases of your remodel.

Here are four critical questions to ask:

1. When should you choose a sink?

Before you start your renovations, select your sink first, and then build your kitchen or bathroom around it. Not only will you be able to make sure your sink fits into your newly designed space, but you can ensure that the current plumbing aligns with it as well.

2. Does your piping need to be replaced?

During the planning phase of your renovation, it’s a good idea to bring in a professional plumber to determine which walls have access to plumbing and which do not. Additionally, a plumber should let you know if you need to install new plumbing to an area and if all plumbing vents are working correctly (and will continue to do so with your plans). Plus, while you have your plumber out, consider checking on items not part of your renovation, such as fixing leaky faucets or installing basement waterproofing.

3. What plumbing permits are required for your renovation?

Depending on where you live, you may need a permit if you plan to add or move plumbing. Your plumber should be able to help you with this process.

4. What fixtures should you upgrade?

It all depends on your budget. It may be the perfect opportunity to install a high-efficiency toilet, showerhead, or sink faucet. Just be sure to do your homework before you install any fixtures. Ask questions of your contractor and plumber as there are many options available, and you’ll want to make sure you have the right one for your plans. Additionally, most contractors or plumbers will let you know if the fixture will help add value to your home, or if it may be a waste of money, in the long-run.
