Nothing kills the good vibes and precious memories from a family vacation like coming back to a plumbing disaster. The second most common homeowners’ insurance claim is water damage to houses. Whether it’s a small puddle in your kitchen, a cascading waterfall coming down your steps, or a nasty “pool” in your basement, the chances of experiencing these scenarios can be significantly reduced with a little pre-vacation preparation.

A few helpful tips:

Check the Hoses – It only takes a few minutes to inspect the hoses connected to your washing machine, dishwasher, and refrigerator ice-maker. Makes sure there are no kinks and replace any old or damaged hoses.

Shut Off Your Water Main – This is especially important in winter months but isn’t a bad idea for the spring and summer either. The shut-off valve is usually located in your basement, garage or outside near the foundation. Also, drain your pipes after shutoff.

Check for Small Leaks – Finding a leak before it becomes a gusher can save you major bucks. Check under your sinks, around your water heater, and around your windows. Also, check for loose shingles on your roof. Recaulk seals and replace shingles if needed.
