When you start your spring cleaning, remember your plumbing and appliances. A little preventative maintenance now can eliminate the expense and aggravation of bigger issues down the road. Although we could offer many more tips, the following list is a good place to start:

Kitchen/Bathrooms

  • Drips or leaks – A leaky faucet can waste up to 100 gallons of water per day.
  • Toilets – If you have to jiggle the handle to stop the water from running or hold it down to flush completely, you may have worn tank parts.
  • Shower heads – If you notice a white buildup around the aerators, those are mineral deposits. Remove the shower head and let it soak in vinegar overnight. That’ll make it easier to clean with an old toothbrush the next day.

Appliances

  • Water heater – Setting your water heater temperature to no higher than 120°F will prevent scalding and save energy. Also, if your water heater is more than 15 years old, we recommend replacing it.
  • Water supply hoses – Check your dishwasher, washing machine, and ice maker hoses for bulges or leaks. For extra durability, use stainless steel hoses wherever possible.
