Summer = vacation! Sometimes that vacation may mean your house is the destination…which means your home’s plumbing is about to be subjected to a slew of potential hazards. If you’d rather spend your summer relaxing and enjoying the company of your visitors, instead of dealing with one plumbing disaster after another, here are some of our best tips for keeping things running smoothly:

  1. Make your bathroom trash cans are readily accessible. Sound obvious? You’d be surprised. Ensuring there are clean and visible trash cans in the bathroom pays off. “If there’s not a trash can right there, people tend to throw Q-tips, tissues and other stuff in the toilets, and that can cause major stoppages,” Anderson says. Play it safe and don’t keep tissues or wipes in your bathroom. If it’s not around, it can’t be flushed!
  2. Be clear about what goes down the disposal. It may seem like a magic machine, but garbage disposal are not meant to have everything run through them. Be clear about which items you’re comfortable disposing of through your sink and if all else fails, don’t let your guests do their own dishes!
  3. Protect your shower drain! Increased traffic in your home’s showers means more build up of hair and debris (especially if you have sand nearby!). Before guests arrive, place mesh baskets in your shower drain to help catch anything potentially problematic. If you do end up with a clog, avoid using harsh chemicals and try using a hook to clear out whatever is stuck.

Enjoy your summer guests and spend your time making memories to last a lifetime. If problems arise, don’t hesitate to reach out to us!
